joys of copyediting II
in a passage about hitchcock, the writers in the education department kept putting quotation marks around the words surprise and suspense and scary. i marked to take all of them out with the note, "no need for SCARE quotes, har har" and promptly thought of randy ingram, who would have made the same note with extraordinary amounts of glee. i think puns are even funnier to me because i know that man and the overwhelming sense of satisfaction and amusement they bring to his life. and there's that slightly sneaky look he gets on his face so you know that what's coming is an especial favorite--the lovingly recycled pun.
